FrameNet, Frame Structure, and the Syntax-Semantics Interface

چکیده
The Berkeley FrameNet project aims at implementing Fillmore’s Frame Semantics program on a broad empirical basis. The syntactic environments of words in corpora are systematically aligned with the semantic frames evoked by the words. It is Fillmore’s vision that such a collection of valency data can pave the way for an empirically grounded theory of the syntax-semantics interface. In this article, we examine to what extent this goal can be achieved by the FrameNet approach in its present form. We take a close look at verbs of cutting and separation and at the representation of attributes, events, and results in the latest FrameNet version. Our investigation reveals a certain lack of systematicity in the definition of frames and frame relations, which may hinder the derivation of linking generalizations. This situation seems to be partly due to the expectation that a system of frames can be developed on a data-driven, purely bottom-up account. As a possible solution, we argue for a richer frame representation which systematically takes into account the inner structure of an event and thereby inherently captures structural relations between frames.

The Construction of Mandarin VerbNet: A Frame-based Study of Statement Verbs
This paper introduces the infrastructure and the principles of a semantic framework used for the analysis and classification of verbs, developed with the aim of constructing a lexical database of Mandarin verbal semantics, called the Mandarin VerbNet. Distinct from most existing lexical databases that enumerate word senses without detailed grammatical considerations, the Mandarin VerbNet is des...
متن کاملTowards a Linking of FrameNet and SUMO
Most end-user applications of natural language processing such as question answering or information retrieval – and especially a research-oriented task like textual entailment – need to process entailment and contradiction in one way or another. In order to detect entailment and contradiction, a system needs to access very different kinds of resources, such as lexicons, semantic word nets or kn...
متن کاملBuilding a computational lexicon and ontology with FrameNet
This paper explores FrameNet as a resource for building a lexicon for deep syntactic and semantic parsing with a practical multipledomain parser. The TRIPS parser is a wide-coverage parser which uses a domain-independent ontology to produce semantic interpretations in 5 different application domains. We show how semantic information from FrameNet can be useful for developing a domainindependent...
متن کاملGraph Methods for Multilingual FrameNets
This paper introduces a new, graphbased view of the data of the FrameNet project, which we hope will make it easier to understand the mixture of semantic and syntactic information contained in FrameNet annotation. We show how English FrameNet and other Frame Semantic resources can be represented as sets of interconnected graphs of frames, frame elements, semantic types, and annotated instances ...
متن کاملCorpus-based Induction of a Frame Semantics Projection for LFG
In computational linguistics there is growing insight that high-quality NLP applications for information access (question anwering, etc.) are in need of deeper linguistic analysis, in particular, semantic analysis. A bottleneck for semantic processing is the lack of large-scale domain-independent lexical semantic resources. While WordNets for several languages are important lexical resources fo...
